초록
A group of products, such as cell phones and cars, can be described as points in the price-quality attributes space. Under this scheme, an efficiency of products can be measured as combinations of quality attributes given a unit of cost, and the DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis) methodology can be applied to estimate the efficiency. In this study, we suggest a methodology to measure the allocative efficiencies of products from the perspective of consumers. The measurement of allocative efficiencies of products requires generation of the utility function of a representative consumer, which was obtained from the random coefficient discrete choice method developed by Berry, Levinsohn and Pakes(1995). The methodology enabled us to estimate different utility functions for consumers with different income levels. Combining DEA with the random coefficient discrete choice model, I estimated the allocative efficiency of products in the Korean automobile market. Especially, I have assumed two group of consumers with different income level, and could estimate different level of product efficiencies according to the income level of consumers.
