초록

김마르다와 이그레이스의 서양 의료와의 인연은 미국 감리회 여성해외선교부에서 세운 여성 전문병원인 보구여관에서 시작되었다. 김마르다는 남편의 폭력으로 다쳐서, 그리고 이그레이스는 병에 걸린 후 주인집에서 버림받아서 보구여관에 환자로 실려왔다. 두 사람은 치료를 받은 후에 기독교 신자가 되어 보구여관에서 일을 하였고, 1903년 한국 최초의 간호학교로 세워진 보구여관 간호원양성소에 제1회로 입학하여 1908년 제1회로 졸업하였다. 이후 김마르다는 보구여관, 평양 광혜여원, 동대문부인병원에서 간호사로 일하면서 후배 간호사를 교육하는 한편 선교활동을 계속하였고 두 아이를 입양하여 다시 어머니가 되었다. 이그레이스는 이하영 목사와 결혼하고 평양 광혜여원에서 일하던 중에 1914년 이구례라는 이름으로 의생 면허를 받았으며, 이후 수원에서 자신의 의원을 열고 활동하였다. 이들의 삶은 전근대에서 근대로 변화하던 조선을 비추는 거울이자, 주체적 근대인으로의 성장기이다.

Abstract

Kim Martha and Lee Grace who are known to be the first Korean graduate nurses were the patients of Bokunyokwan, the missionary hospital for women and children in Seoul. Kim was the victim of family violence, and Lee was an abandoned slave. When they recovered, they decided to work at Bokunyokwan and received some education there. When Bokunyokwan started the first nursing school in 1903, they decided to enter it. Other Korean women who entered the school gave up their studies, but Kim and Lee continued their training and graduated in 1908. Kim worked as a nurse in missionary hospitals and was very eager in mission work for years. Lee married to a minister and worked as a nurse in missionary hospitals. Based on her knowledge of western medicine and medical experience, Lee became a doctor of Korean medicine, and opened her own clinic.
