Abstract
Despite domestic policy efforts to promote reusable cup adoption, actual usage rates remain low in Korea. This study investigated the determinants of reusable cup usage behavior and analyzed the effects of sequential interventions combining environmental information provision and economic incentives. A survey of 660 Korean consumers was conducted, employing ordinal logistic regression and decision tree analyses. Results identified environmental values as the primary determinant, with coffee shop visit frequency, social norms, gender, and age showing significant effects. Notably, visit frequency demonstrated a nonlinear pattern with behavioral change accelerating at the threshold of 2-3 visits per week. Following environmental information provision, willingness to use reusable cups increased from 55.6% to 87.6%, with a particularly high conversion rate of 76.5% among previous non-users. Economic incentive analysis revealed that respondents motivated by environmental reasons required minimal or no incentives, confirming the importance of intrinsic motivation. In contrast, those citing inconvenience as a barrier could be divided into two groups: one responsive to low-level incentives and another resistant even to high-level incentives. This study demonstrates that an integrated approach sequentially combining information provision and economic incentives is more effective than single interventions. Furthermore, findings suggest that reusable cup promotion policies require targeted strategies tailored to consumer psychological and behavioral characteristics.
