Abstract
This study aims to systematically analyze the business models of the domestic marine data industry. Recently, with the advancement of digital transformation and AI technology, marine data has emerged as a key resource in various fields; however, in Korea, private sector participation and commercial utilization remain in their early stages. This study conducted an in-depth case analysis using the Business Model Canvas (BMC) on representative companies in major fields such as marine, fisheries, and shipping logistics, thereby highlighting the roles and business strategies of private companies throughout the entire cycle of data collection, processing, and utilization. The main implications are as follows. First, in order to realize the economic value of data, it is necessary to advance the entire process of data processing, analysis, and utilization. Second, institutional foundations that ensure the openness and interoperability of public data and promote private-sector utilization are essential, and international cases such as those in Europe can be referenced for this purpose. Third, strategies are required to promote the serviceization of marine data through the integration of advanced technologies such as AI and digital twins. Fourth, the creation of a virtuous cycle data ecosystem through collaboration between public institutions, private companies, and research institutions is important, and policy and organizational support must be provided in parallel. This study provides practical implications for policy design and ecosystem development aimed at activating data-driven industries and can serve as foundational material for the future advancement of the marine data industry.
