Abstract
This study analyzed the advertisements for menstruation in domestic Japanese newspapers from the 1920s and 1930s, titled ‘Tsukiyaku’ (月やく), and examined the background of women’s silence regarding menstruation. During the colonial period, menstruation was a major social issue. It was a measure of personal health, the first step towards bearing superior offspring, and an indicator of the empire’s reproductive capability, always under social surveillance. from the late 1920s, advertisements titled “Tsukiyaku” for menstrual remedies noticeably increased in Japanese newspapers in Korea. The analysis reveals that Tsukiyaku was not only a treatment for menstrual irregularities but also an alternative route used by Japanese women in colonial Korea for contraception and abortion. Advertisers and female readers avoided the authorities’ surveillance through a silent code understood only among themselves. In this process, the silence surrounding menstruation became a final tactic chosen by women to maintain control over their own menstrual experience.
