Abstract
To date, research on women’s experiences during the Korean War has mostly overlooked the contributions of women combatants, primarily due to the prevailing belief that women occupied only supportive roles in the conflict. The experiences of women from North Korea who served as irregular soldiers have been hardly examined. This study seeks to examine how women from the Kwolsan Mountain garrison in Hwanghae Province, an irregular army, perceived and constructed meaning from their wartime experiences, particularly the gendered dimensions of their narratives. The findings indicated that while Lee Jin-sun served as a female irregular soldier during the Korean War, she did not place significant emphasis on this role due to her observations of the war’s absurdities, including numerous fatalities and gender-based violence. Consequently, anti-war advocates highlighting the anguish and fatalities resulting from warfare gained prominence. Furthermore, she took pride in her position of caring for and nurturing others, as well as the female subjectivity manifested throughout this process. Future endeavors must prioritize the visibility of women’s experiences and recollections of the Korean War by conducting further research on the representation politics surrounding Lee Jung-sook, ‘a female general’ of the Kwolsan Mountain Partisan, as well as the roles and activities of female spies.
