Abstract
During the early and middle periods of the Goryeo dynasty, the royal family could maintain its bloodline, authority, and privileges by taking women of bureaucratic families as consorts yet forbidding the marriages of royal princesses and daughters of titled royal relatives to men from bureaucratic families. The royal family, once a closed and exclusive group, was transformed into a ‘multiethnic household’ following the marriage between King Chungnyeol and Jegukdaejangongju in the late Goryeo period. The royal family gradually embodied the Mongolian social structure significantly influencing the intertwining of Mongolian and Goryeo social structures. One notable figure who directly experienced this period of upheaval was Jeonghwagungju, the first consort of King Chungnyeol. In December 1275, a dispute over seating arrangements occurred at a banquet attended by Jeonghwagungju and Jegukdaejangongju. Culturally, this incident represented Jegukdaejangongju’s attempt to reinterpret and destabilize the royal hierarchy of the Goryeo dynasty based on Mongol imperial norms. Politically, her primary objective appears to be the formalization of her status as primary empress and the definitive establishment of royal succession in favor of her son. Following the incident, Jeonghwagungju was demoted to the lower rank of Wonju (院主) and her prince was excluded from the line of succession. However, she did not lose the privileges she had enjoyed under the old system. Her multifaceted nature reveals how the old system adapted even as a new order was being shaped by external factors.
