Abstract

The Jowang was a kitchen god worshipped in the belief that it would protect each household from bad luck and bring happiness and health to the family. It was also believed to be involved in the property of the family, and especially in the protection of fire pits, so people gave the characteristic of the fire god to jowang. In the past, each household paid reverence to the jowang. during a gut(exorcism) or gosa(ritual), or housewives would rise early in the morning and prepare clean water for the jowang and pray to the god wishing to bless the family. With the passage of time, changes in living conditions and the development of technology, as well as the awareness of people, has affected this folk religion. This study will examine the characteristics and the succession of the jowang folk religion by focusing on the book, “Korea’s Household Religion(9 volumes)”, published by the National Cultural Properties Research Institute. First,‘ jowang’was the most widely used term across the nation, although in certain regions of Gyeongsangnam-do and in one city in Gyeongsangbuk-do and in one gun of Gangwon-do, the term ‘seongju jowang’was used. Such terms seem to be related to specific types of dwelling. In the case of houses built in the aligned shape of ‘一’, seongju(household guardian god) and jowang are seated together in the kitchen, so the composite‘ seongju jowang’was used. Second is about the divinity and the role of jowang. The jowang was usually known as a female who protected households, but it was known as a yongwang(Dragon king) in Gangwon-do, a hwasin(fire god) in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and a jaemulsin(property god) in Chungcheungnam-do. The role of the jowang was to guard the happiness and peace of the family. Third, the jowang usually does not have a physical body, so it was worshipped as geongung. In some cases, it had the shapes of jongji(small bowl), onggi(pottery), sabal(bowl), or jongjaegi(small bowl). In rare cases, a husband’s rice bowl was used as a jowang. Depending on the regions, jowang had different shapes: in Gangwondo, as geongungwith no physical shape; in Gyeongsangnam-do, Jeollabuk-do, Jeollanam-do, in a shape of dishes; in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Chungcheungnam-do, Chuncheongbuk-do, as geongung or in the shape of dishes. Fifth is about the place where jowang was worshipped. When a daughter-in-law worships jowang after marriage, she might worship her mother-in-law’s jowang or she might worship her own jowang after forming her own household. The usual place for worshiping jowang was related to the kitchen, such as a cooking fireplace, a fire hole, or a cauldron. The order of worship service was usually worshipping seongju first, but in Chungcheongnam-do or Jeollabuk-do, jowang was worshipped first. The most common sacrificial offering for jowang was clean water. Other offerings such as me, gaeng(soup), pyeon(steamed rice cake, red bean cake, etc.), charcoal, vegetable side dishes(dropwort, radish, etc.), fruits, seasonal foods, and alcoholic beverages. In some cases, if jowang is perceived as a goddess, steamed white rice cake, fish with no strong smell, sungnyung(scorched-rice tea) orgamju(rice punch) were served. There were certain rules when processing sacrificial offerings for jowang. Those rules were also part of symbolism. The offerings served to jowang must not be shared with strangers. When only family members are allowed to eat the offerings, sometimes only daughter-in-law was allowed to eat them. If nobody was allowed to eat the offerings in some cases, they were disposed in a clean place. As described above, jowang had the characteristics of generality rather than regional characteristics. Moreover, depending on the situations or the propensity of worshipper, jowang has special characteristics. Therefore, it is difficult to make clear-cut cultural regional divisions according to the folk religion of jowangalone. If jowang has a certain relationship with deities worshipped at home such as seongju or cheuksin(god of outhouse), their interrelationship should also be investigated from a new perspective.
