Abstract

How does the cinema appropriate the body? The body has always be an object of thought in European civilization, which uses it to connect human beings to God: one shall create an exact image of the body. But in Asia, such an idealized image of the body, which is never separated from the mind, does not exist, hence the presence of the ordinary body in Asian visual culture. We study in particular Asian cinema, for example through the works of Tsai Ming-liang, Jia Zhangke and Wong Kar-wai, in which the image of ordinaries bodies engenders an intense expression even when it remains speechless. Sometimes, communication is not verbal but gestural : it takes place through daily actions such as eating or washing oneself. In Tsai Ming-liang’s works, the problems of the body emphasize the malfunctions of the parent-child relationship, while Jia Zhangke shows the body as a way to express a feeling;in Wong Kar-wai’s movies, emotion is written on bodies wearing clothes. If there is no such thing as a model of the body to reproduce, these Asian movies convey through the body what silent characters feel and perceive.
