Abstract

Mokpo(木浦) is a place formed through port opening in 1897 and has a distinct image as a modern city. The residents, however, have endeavored to hand down Yi Chungmugong(李忠武公)’s achievements and legacies in Gohado(高下島), one of the remains from the traditional era. This author pays attention to the characteristics in the perspective of Mokpo, the modern city’s ‘locality’. The results of this study can be summed up largely in two areas as below: First, this study examined the recognition of those in Mokpo on Gohado in modern times and the effort to transmit the legacies of Yi Chungmugong. Gohado residents have held a memorial service for Yi Chungmugong every year and regarded it as a crucial event of the town community. The government of the time, too, considered Gohado as a historic site for Yi Chungmugong, and throughout the Japanese colonial era, ‘Gohado’ was also regarded as one of the important historic sites having a monument to Yi Sun-shin and people visited it as a popular course for traveling. Mokpo people have continued to remember and commemorate Yi Sun-shin, and Gohado has been used as space that symbolizes Mokpo’s ‘locality’. Second, this study looked into the history of representative cultural heritages in Mokpo associated with Yi Chungmugong and analyzed their value. Gohado’s fortress, the monument to Yi Chungmugong, Nojeokbong(露積峯), and ganggangsulae were investigated mainly. Based on the records of the Japanese colonial era, this author figured out how people of the time had recognized Gohado’s fortress. Mokpo people’s recognition and effort found in the process of preserving the monument to Yi Chungmugong and using it as space for commemoration were examined. Regarding Nojeokbong, this study analyzed related historical records to discover the original of the tale and reinterpreted the meaning of ‘locality’ contained in it. As heritages of living culture, this author has examined how Yi Chungmugong is associated with Gohado’s ganggangsulae and the history of salt production. Through the analysis described above, this researcher has found that ‘Yi Chungmugong’ and his legacies have been positioned as the ‘locality’ of the region from the particular situation of Japanese colonialism up until today and Mokpo people have made efforts to maintain them constantly so far.
