이 연구는 기록에 대한 대표적인 은유를 활용하여 기록관리 담론의 역사를 개괄하고, 각 담론이 현대 기록관리에 던지는 의미와 가능성을 분석하기 위한 것이다. 기록학의 특정 담론이나 방법론을 이해하려면 그 배경에 깔린 “기록에 대한 관점”을 먼저 파악하는 것이 효과적인데, 기록의 은유에는 이러한 관점이 상징적으로 표현된다. 따라서 은유는 담론의 핵심을 파악하는 단서이자 기록학적 사유를 위한 강력한 도구가 될 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 먼저 선행연구를 토대로, 근대 기록학에서 전개된 기록관리 담론의 흐름을 증거, 기억, 생성으로 범주화하였다. 이어서 각 담론 영역별로 대표적인 기록의 은유를 확인하였으며, 증거 담론에서는 퇴적물과 유기체, 기억 담론에서는 텍스트와 내러티브. 생성 담론에서는 고고학 유적지라는 은유가 선정되었다. 각 담론의 은유적 특징은 다음과 같은 내용을 중심으로 기술하였다. 첫째, 각 담론을 대표하는 기록의 은유가 의미하는 바, 그리고 그러한 은유가 등장한 배경과 의도를 파악하였다. 둘째, 각 은유가 기록관리 방법론, 그리고 아키비스트의 역할과 윤리에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지, 현대 기록관리에 던지는 의미는 무엇인지를 살펴보았다.
Abstract
This study aims to outline the history of archival discourse through metaphors of archives, and to analyse the implications of each discourse for contemporary archival management. In order to understand an archival discourse, it is useful to identify the underlying view of archives that is symbilised in the metaphors of archives. Metaphors can thus be clues to the heart of a discourse and powerful tools for archival thinking. This study first categorises the streams of archival discourse that have developed in modern archival studies into evidence, memory and creation, based on an analysis of previous research. Second, it analyses the metaphors of archives that are representative of each discourse. ‘Sediment’ and ‘organism’ are chosen for the evidence discourse, ‘text’ and ‘narrative’ for the memory discourse, and ‘archaeological site’ for the creation discourse. The metaphorical features of each discourse are described in terms of: i) what is meant by the metaphor and what is the context of its emergence; ii) how has each metaphor influenced archival methods and the role and ethics of archivists? Finally, the implications of each metaphor for contemporary archival management are explored.
