Abstract

Development-driven land expropriation and submergence dismantle not only the physical foundation of dwelling but also individual lives, communal memory, and ethical relations. This study explores the existential anxiety and social dislocation experienced by communities displaced by public development, and examines the restorative role of participatory documentation. Drawing on Heidegger, Bollnow, and Levinas, the concept of “Sense of dwelling” is defined as comprising existential, affective, and ethical dimensions. By linking this framework with the Michelle Caswell and UCLA Community Archives Lab’s theories of Symbolic Annihilation and Representational Belonging, the study conceptualizes displacement as “the loss of dwelling through symbolic annihilation” and interprets documentation as “the recovery of dwellingness through representational belonging.” Case studies of Doryong Village in Uiwang and Ggagosil Village in Jinju demonstrate that documentation enables displaced residents to affirm their existence, gain social recognition, rebuild communal ties, and restore ethical relations. Ultimately, the study proposes a new archival paradigm that views records not as static artifacts of the past, but as an ethical practice and a process of creating a “social dwelling place” that sustains life after loss.
