제 1차 세계대전을 배경으로 한 영화 <1917>은 미국의 샘멘데스(Sam Mendes)감독이 최근에 만든 전쟁영화로써 참혹하고 비참했던 제1차 세계대전 당시의 생생한 전쟁 상황을 사실적으로 묘사하며 군대라는 조직체계 속에서의 개인이 맡은 책임과 희생의 가치를 장엄하게 보여주고 있다. 샘맨데스는 영상을 표현하는 데 있어서 쇼트의 편집을 통해 내용과 의미를 전달하는 몽타주 기법 보다는 사실성과 객관성이 강조되는 ‘롱테이크(Long Take)’ 기법을 활용하였다. 특히 하나의 테이크로 전체 영화를 완성해가는 ‘원 씬 원 테이크(One Scene, One Take) 방식이 아닌 여러 개의 롱테이크를 기술적으로 연결해 원 콘티뉴이어스 쇼트(One continuous shot)로 만들어 영화를 완성하였다. 원-콘티뉴이티 쇼트의 효과는 촬영 기술과 연출의 표현 방식에 있어서 새로운 지평을 개척한 영화로 평가받으며 전쟁 영화의 일반화된 고정관념을 벗어나게 하였다. 영화 <1917>은 이러한 독창적인 롱테이크 기법을 통해 그 누구도 창조하거나 실험하지 못했던 전쟁 영화의 장르적인 특성을 재발견하였으며 사실적인 전쟁 묘사와 병사 개개인의 심리와 미장센을 심층적으로 고찰 할 수 있도록 하였다. 또한, 카메라 움직임과 결부된 시점(Point of view)의 응용은 캐릭터의 감정 및 영화 전체의 톤과 매너에 영향을 끼치며 영화에 깊이감을 주었다. 이 논문에서는 <1917>에 적용된 롱테이크 기법에 대한 심층적 분석을 토대로 롱테이크가 내포하고 있는 미학적인 가치를 창출하고 향후 롱테이크 기법의 발전 가능성을 모색하려는 취지 및 방향성 도출을 목적으로 이 논고를 집필하였다.
Abstract
As a war film that has been recently filmed by American director Sam Mendes, the film <1917> with the background in the First World War, is solemnly showing the value of responsibility and sacrifice of individuals in the organizational system of military by realistically describing the vivid war situation of the First World War which was brutal and miserable. For expressing the images, Sam Mendes utilized the ‘Long-Take’ technique emphasizing the reality and objectivity, rather than the montage technique delivering the contents and meanings through the editing of shots. Especially, he completed this film with ‘one continuous shot’ by technically connecting several long-takes, instead of ‘one scene, one take’ that would complete a whole film with a single take. As the effects of ‘one continuous shot’, it was evaluated as a film that has opened a new horizon for shooting techniques and expression method of directing, which also contributed to getting out of the generalized stereotypes of war films. Through this creative long-take technique, the film <1917> rediscovered the genre characteristics of war films that had not be created or experimented by anybody, and also deeply considered the psychology and mise-en-scene of each individual soldier, and the realistic description of war. Also, the application of ‘point of view’ connected to the movement of camera added the depth to the film by influencing the characters' emotion and the tone and manner of the whole film. The objective of this thesis was to create the aesthetic value inherent in long-take, and also to seek for the possibility of development of long- take technique in the future, based on the in-depth analysis on the long-take technique applied to the film <1917>.
