『증병조참판정공전』의 임진왜란 초기해전 기록 고찰

Abstract

In the year of 1592, when the Imjin War broke out, the Joseon Navy participated in several battles on four occasions, commonly called the Early Naval Battles of the Imjin War(임진왜란 초기해전). This is significant in that it served as an opportunity for Joseon to seize control of the seas in the early stages of the war. Chungmugong(충무공) Yi Sun-shin(이순신)’s drafts of war reports are mainly used to study the Early Naval Battles of the Imjin War. This drafts recorded very detailed information about the activities and battles of the Joseon Navy, making it difficult to find other comparable historical records. However, since the drafts were prepared by an individual, they have a limitation that they contain some subjective perspective. There is also a fundamental issue with reports. As many scholars have pointed out so far, the study on the sea battles of the Imjin War is biased toward Yi Sun-shin's drafts of war reports, so efforts are being made to utilize Chinese and Japanese historical records as well as Korean historical records to overcome this issue. Not long ago, a historical record called 『Jeungbyeongjochampanjeonggongjeon(증병조참판정공전)』 was discovered, and it is noteworthy because it contains records about the Early Naval Battles of the Imjin War. 『Jeungbyeongjochampanjeonggongjeon』 is a biography of Nokdo-Manho(녹도만호) Jeong Un(정운), who died at the Battle of Busanpo(부산포해전) in 1592, and was written by Joo Yeop(주엽), a student of An Bang-jun(안방준). This historical record was prepared based on the oral description of what Oh Yoon-gun(오윤건), a person who served as a seaman during the Imjin War, experienced in the battle. The battle progresses of the Joseon Navy included in 『Jeungbyeongjochampanjeonggongjeon』 can be a research topic to fill the deficiencies of the research on the Early Naval Battles of the Imjin War. To this end, we will examine the author, writing background, composition of the text of 『Jeungbyeongjochampanjeonggongjeon』 and compare the battle progresses of the Joseon Navy recorded in the text with other historical records such as Yi Sun-shin's drafts of war reports to examine its historical value.
