Abstract
This study analyzes the transmission and transformation of falconry as a municipal intangible cultural heritage in contemporary Korean society. Focusing on the roles and activities of officially designated falconry holders, the study examines the challenges faced by both holders and trainees in the process of transmission and proposes future directions. Currently, there is one designated falconry holder each in Jinan-gun, Jeonbuk State, and Daejeon City. Although the content and methods of transmission differ depending on regional characteristics, the holders’ capabilities and enthusiasm, and the level of community support and interest, the challenges surrounding falconry transmission are largely similar. First, learning falconry entails significant economic burdens and institutional limitations, making it difficult to connect with professional livelihoods; thus, trainees often engage in falconry as a hobby. Realistic applications and systematic support policies are therefore required. Second, to ensure the effective transmission of falconry, it is necessary to develop structured educational programs and management systems tailored to the actual conditions. Given the time and financial commitment required of many trainees, a management system reflecting falconry's specificity is essential. Third, falconry requires the transmission of traditional hunting culture and the development of strategies to promote regional revitalization through its integration with various experiential and educational programs centered on falcons. Finally, strengthening the social foundation and expanding scholarly discourse are essential for falconry to continue to be transmitted as an intangible cultural heritage under current conditions.
