Abstract
During the Korean War, various types of strangers flocked to Geoje Island. At that time, the strangers who entered Geoje Island on a large scale were North Korean refugees. North Korean refugees were people who left their hometowns and homes where they lived as owners and came in like 'guests' in unfamiliar places. They arrived at Geoje Island hoping to be taken as 'citizens' or 'people' in South Korean society. Residents of Geoje Island provided foods, temporary shelters, and other accommodation facilities for North Korean refugees. For North Korean refugees, ‘Yankee Market’ was a channel through which they could accumulate wealth beyond their livelihood. Yankee Market, which did not belong to anywhere socio-spatially, was a new space for refugees who did not have a fixed place to live a dynamic life. Most of the North Korean refugees were from Hamgyeong-do, and many belonged to the upper-middle elite class. In Geoje Island, they established refugee schools and added classes with the help of the U.S. military, the South Korean government, and local residents. Their high educational zeal was an investment to grow future generations into full citizens of South Korean society. However, North Korean refugees did not come into the category of 'us' which they exchanged gifts with local residents.
