Abstract

Fiona Tan’s film <Disorient> was addressed as a kind of micro-cosmos in the Dutch pavillion, at the 53th Vennice Viennale. This paper suggests <Disorient> as an essay film which has a structure of conversational intertext. It’s main surtexts are Marco Polo’s itinery Tale of Oriental Journey(ca. 1275) and Italo Calvino’s novel Invisible Cities(1972). <Disorient> consists of two parallel screen which confront each other, one is a spectacular film of artiticial archive like a “Wunderkammer, cabinet of curiosity”, and the other is a description about many Asian countries that was contained Tan’s itinerary. This research tries to approach Tan’s <Disorient> as an Essay Film, so I want to illuminate <Disorient> in terms of the autobiological reflexivity of the director like a video portrait, disjunction between fiction and documentary and structure of conversational intertextuality. Most of Tan’s works are autographical and have a traits of intertextuality. Due to an overlapping of several citational texts and interactivity of meta-text structure, Tan’s works make spectators to think. Conversational intertextuality also occurs in-between many of Tan’s works that literature, photography, and film installation, to amplify the effects. The peculiar effects of Tan’s works are not only from conversational structure and intertextuality, but also from the way installation is done. It invites a spectator to the experience of the work, and this way directly involves the spectator. The conversational structure of Essay Film bring about “the third”, which always is deferred, and the spectator is invited to see the both sides: the inside as the participant and the “beyond” from given scopic field. Tan’s usages of trans-systematic and meta-form approach, such as ‘mirror of mirrors’, ‘archive of archives’ and ‘multiple of multiples’, the intertextuality itself can be approached through Julia Kristeva’s theoretical term, geno-text and pheno-text. Also, Tan’s technical operation of photography and film aesthetics makes us think about the traits of the two different media. Likewise, Tan’s works perform a role of essay film as multi-faceted way in contemporary art. Essay films are the most intimate confessions of the director and performance practices. It is also a keen social criticism that make the spectator to participate in the experience of seeing authentic viewing, and what is the true meaning of “seeing” among the unstable and fluctuated mobile spectatorship.
