Abstract

This thesis is a translation of the part of Wu Xiaolin’s Zhongguosanwenmeixue(里仁書局印行, 民國84) discussing the aesthetics of Chinese prose. In this work, Wu Xiaolin described the problems related to the aesthetics of Chinese prose, as well as rules associated with it, the definition of prose and the way to look at ancient Chinese prose, and the study of the aesthetics of ancient Chinese prose. First, I express my own views on the subject and scope of research and classification of the period of aesthetic change in ancient Chinese prose. The fourth chapter of the book, 不專一能, 怪怪奇奇, has been translated. Wu Xiaolin defined Hanyu’s greatest characteristic as not concentrating on one skill but pursuing greatness. Other characteristics were analyzed according to relationships, as follows: 1) Preface, 2) Relationship between Wen (文) and Dao (道), 3) Uncomfortable sound, 4) Relationship between Wen (文) and Qi (氣), 5) Emphasis on innovation, and 6) The pursuit of beauty in the spirit of freedom.
