Abstract
This article examines the reception and reinterpretation of the "Peach Blossom Spring" (Taohuayuan) imagery from Tao Yuanming's Record of the Peach Blossom Spring by literati in the Tang and Song dynasties. During the Tang Dynasty, influenced by Daoist culture, the imagery underwent immortalization: Li Bai envisioned it as a celestial realm, Wang Wei's Taoyuan Sequence amplified its mystical aura, and literati frequently associated the utopia with longevity and Daoist hermits, transforming a secluded agrarian refuge into a Daoist paradise.A pivotal shift occurred in the Song Dynasty. Su Shi, in his Harmonizing with Tao’s Peach Blossom Spring, refuted the immortal interpretation, arguing it represented real-world reclusive villages. He reconfigured its essence—from a closed utopia into a symbol of inner-worldly seclusion, emphasizing spiritual transcendence over societal rejection. This spurred a trend of localization: figures like Li Gang identified Fujian's remote mountains as actual Peach Blossom Springs, and literati widely likened idyllic homelands to this ideal. The concept further evolved into the aspiration to "make all under heaven a Peach Blossom Spring," turning it from a geographical mystery into a metaphor for both an ideal mental state and an ideal society.
