『서유견문』의 과학, 이데올로기 그리고 수사학

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is the study on the epistemologic circumstances in the early modern times. For the sake of it, I have studied on the relations of discourses in the 『seo-yu-gyun-mun』. Especially, I taked a serious viewof the epistemology, language structures, perspectives in the 'science' discourse and 'politics' discourse. The representive science discourses in the 『seo-yu-gyun-mun』are modern astronomy and modern geography. The representation of Earth and World that this two discourses produce is identical to the representation of inter-national relation and inter-indivisual relation that modern politics discourse produces. The identity of representations is caused by the identity of logic that two discourses produce the representation according to. The former is scientific rule, the latter are international law(萬國公法) and public law. The methodic character of modern astronomy and modern geography are classification and analysis. The language of modern astronomy and modern geography is quantitave and diagramatic. The perspective of modern science classifies the nature after the analysis by commom unit. The conception of 'the civilization' is the core of modern politics in the 『seo-yu-gyun-mun』, and the ideology also classifies nations according to the degree of civilization, namely the degree of technology and politic organization. The rhetoric of classification is confirmed in the method and language of the ideology equally in it of modern science. I proved the identity of the epistemology, language structures, perspectives in the ‘science’ discourse and ‘politics’ discourse. consequently, I was able to understand the epistemologic character of the science and politics which korean intellectuals translated from the western academic discource in the early modern times through the 『seo-yu-gyun-mun』.
