개화기 서사의 장르적 성격을 드러내기 위해서는 그 서사들에 접근하는 시선 속에 내재된 현재의 장르(소설)에 대한 관념을 우선 괄호 속에 넣지 않으면 안 되는, 일종의 방법적인 인식론적 단절이 요구된다. 현재의 소설이라는 관념을 벗어나서 개화기 서사의 구체적 존재방식을 살펴보면, 개화기 서사의 내용이나 형식상의 변화는 그 매체로부터의 자율화 여부에 결정적으로 의거하고 있다는 사실을 발견하게 된다. 기사적 성격을 갖는 잡보란 내의 서사들의 담론 형식을 ‘신문/소설’이라 한다면, 이 단계에서는 언문일치에 의한 현전성 획득이 보장되지 않는 상황 속에서 그 초기에는 대화체, 우화, 몽유록, 전(傳) 양식 등의 이전 시대 서사 형식에 내재된 계몽의 음성이, 그리고 그 후기에는 ‘사실’로서의 사건에 대한 강조가 현전성을 대체하고 있다. ‘신문/소설’에 내재된 계몽과 서사 사이의 긴장, 사실과 허구 사이의 긴장이 하나의 작품 속에서 수직적 관련 하에 들어오기 시작하면서 ‘신문/소설’로부터의 탈피가 비롯된다. 근대 소설의 기원 문제는 구소설로부터의 탈피 여부의 문제가 아니라, 근본적으로는 이러한 저널리즘에 종속된 담론이 그 자체의 자율성을 획득해 나가는 문제이며, 이는 신문을 비롯한 사회 전체 담론의 분화와 배치에 의거하고 있다.
Abstract
To propose the generic feature of narratives of enlightenment era, an epistemological discontinuation should be needed. That is to say, we must suspend our generic notion of modern novel for that work. If we examine the concrete mode of existence of narratives of enlightenment era, getting out of the notion of modern novel of our days, we can confirm that transformation in contents or form of narratives of enlight- enment era is based on the autonomy from media. If we can call narratives of enlightenment era in the general news columns ‘news/novel’, in this stage the voice of enlightenment in the forms of narratives of fomer ages substitute reality of modern novel. Along the tension between enlightenment and narrativity is sublated, the narratives start escaping from ‘news/novel'. At this point, korean modern novel starts its process.
