Abstract
The questions of ‘growth’ or ‘culture’ (Bildungs) have double meanings in the aspect of the artistic representation of modernity. It is Mujeong by Lee, Gwang-soo that is the most suitable precedent for the ‘Bildungsroman’. While Mujeong had realized the model of subjectivity that the young should follow, that is, the leading role of ‘Bildungsroman’ by representing the real and future lives of the Korean society, this novel had its periodical limit. The male subject that embodied culture and the representative problem of the novel should be considered on the texts after Mujeong. The novel, Love and Mujeong, are in accord with such interpretive attempts. If Love of Lee can be referred as the final work of his novel, Yujeong that has been published right before Love can be thought quite the opposite. In the former, in spite of the double-triple crises that were sparked by love conflict, the male character completed himself into moral subject, but in the latter, in contrast, he ended up in social destruction. The novel, Yujeong, therefore, was a kind of bridge text that Lee, Gwang-soo had to take in order to create Love, eventually, Love was the other half of Yujeong that had been excluded from the process in the acquisition of the narrative completion. Love Song of Lethe and That which falls has wings by Lee, Mun-yeol can be applied to this situation. The characters of the works of Lee, Gwang-soo and Lee, Mun-yeol, who are located in the beginning and an end of moralistic Bildungsroman’s genealogy, shared romantic personalities and, at the same time, crucially differed on its internalizing attitude toward their personalities. The pathos, such as self-ecstasy and self-humbling, encouraged each character and involved into building separately different subjects. What is import, in this genealogy of Bildungsroman, is that the Korean novels face the predicament because of the constant reading practice that such narcissism is a part of the Korean culture or an exclusive property of male by popular response and reading experience.
