본고는 잡지 『새벽』에 대한 저자의 앞선 두 연구를 잇는 후속 연구이다. 본고 역시 두 연구들과 마찬가지로 『새벽』에 대한 연구가 필요함을 제기하며 그 일환으로 특히 4.19 정국 기간 『새벽』의 지면을 연구 대상 텍스트로 삼는다. 본고의 목표는 『새벽』의 4.19에 대한 담론화와 재현 양상에 대해 상세히 분석하는 것이다. 이는 2.28 데모에서 4.26 대통령 하야에 이르는 4.19의 전개 과정에 대한 『새벽』의 담론화와 재현이 ‘어떠한 방식으로’ 정치적 효과를 산출했는지 규명하는 작업이라고 할 수 있다. 짧게 정리하자면 『새벽』은 의미부여와 해석을 통해 4.19를 담론화, 역사화하려는 방향성과 4.19 당시 현장의 구체적인 모습들을 있는 그대로 들려주고 보여주는 재현의 방향성을 교직시키는 방식으로 정치적 효과를 산출했다고 할 수 있다. 이 두 방향성은 『새벽』의 지면에서 각기 분리되는 것이 아니라 상호 긴장하며 4.19라는 실재를 접촉하게 하는 통로들이었다고 하겠다. 『새벽』은 4.19 정국의 담론장에서 주목할 만한 영향력을 발휘했지만 그에 비해 거의 연구되지 않았다. 이런 점에서 본고가 『새벽』 1960년 4, 5, 6월 호에 나타난 4.19의 전개 과정에 대한 담론화와 재현의 양상을 분석하는 것은 4.19 정국의 담론장에 대한 다원적 이해의 정도를 높이는 데 일조하는 유의미한 작업이 될 수 있을 것이라 예상한다.
Abstract
This study is a follow-up study of two previous studies on the author’s magazine Saebyeok. Like those two studies, it also raises the need for a study on Saebyeok and as part of that, the content of Saebyeok during the 4.19 period is used as the text for the study. This paper aims to analyze in-depth the discourse and representation of the 4.19 in Saebyeok. This can be said to be a task of identifying ‘how’ the discourse and representation of the Saebyeok on the 4.19 development process from the demonstration on February 28th to the president’s resignation on April 26th produced the political effect. In short, Saebyeok can be said to have produced a political effect by mixing the direction of making discourse and historicizing the 4.19 through the imparting and interpreting its meaning and the direction of representation that tells and shows the specific scenes of the 4.19 as they are. These two directions were not separate in Saebyeok but worked as channels that brought in contact with the reality of the 4.19 countervailing each other. Saebyeok exerted a notable influence in the discourse sphere of the 4.19 but was rarely studied as a research subject. In this respect, it is expected that analyzing the discourse and representation of the 4.19 development process that appeared in the April, May, and June issues of Saebyeok in 1960 can be a significant work that contributes to increasing the degree of pluralistic understanding of the discourse sphere of 4.19.
