Abstract

This paper deals with cultural conflicts between British muslims and British society, the so-called ‘cultural war’ in Britain. It seeks to provide an assessment of their religious identity as a major cause of the conflicts. There are over 1.5 million muslims living in Britain. Although they are associated first and foremost with South Asian background, they have been neither ethnically nor socially homogeneous. However, since the Rushdie affair of 1989 they appeared as a unified group at the national level, and they came to be regarded as ‘outsiders’ of British society. As Muslim immigrants insisted on their cultural and religious needs as permanent residents or citizens, Islamophobia spreaded into the society. Furthermore, it became more acute in the aftermath of the 9.11 Terror, and the London Terror of 2005. The intensified Islamophobia seems to lead British muslims to unify themselves as a social group, and they now claim more liberal and more multi-cultural society which could accommodate their religious life. In order to integrate immigrants Britain has practiced ‘multiculturalism’ model, which is fairly open to accommodating the cultural and religious needs of immigrants, pursuing multicultural society. But, ironically, muslim immigrants could not have been protected under British laws, because the laws based on racial categories do not recognise them as a racial group. Therefore, unless the government reforms the laws, accepting them as a unified qusai-racial group, the cultural war does not seem to end.
