Abstract

This paper is a critical review of Kim Young-chan’s Language and Revolution: Korean Literature after the Revolution (Gang, 2024). The book traces how the memory of the April 19th Revolution and the interpretive struggles surrounding it were structured into the language and form of 1960s literature, and examines how post-revolutionary literature became the origin of the spiritual structure of modern Korean literature from liberation until the late 20th century. To achieve this, the author meticulously re-reads texts—including the criticisms of the April 19th generation and novels by Choi In-hoon, Kim Seung-ok, Lee Cheong-jun, Park Tae-soon, Son Chang-seop, and Lee Ho-cheol—that perceived and reflected upon the reality of the 1960s with their unique language and forms, and which experienced Korean history and reality as symptoms. Accordingly, this review paper aims to discuss how Language and Revolution re-examines core issues in 1960s literary studies, thereby renewing the analysis and interpretation of 1960s literature and expanding its research scope. Above all, to reconstruct the impact of the April 19th Revolution on 1960s literature, the book traces the “eventfulness” of the April 19th as a political event and how the memory of the revolution, imprinted in the literature of the April 19th generation, actuated the politics of literature. Furthermore, it subtly analyzes how Kim Seung-ok’s thematic concern with the “self-world,” Lee Cheong-jun’s “grid novel” form, and the chaos and disorder in Park Tae-soon’s early novels embody the spiritual structure of April 19th generation literature and demonstrate its political nature. This arduous work, utilizing the method of psychoanalytic criticism, confirms that even after the “turn to cultural studies,” we are still compelled to dwell within literary texts, and that the language and form of the text are simultaneously the site that embodies literariness and the method that expresses the politics of literature itself.
