Abstract
This study examines post-liberation Korean novels that address pro-Japanese collaboration (chinil) and collaborators (chinilpa), aiming to clarify major literary and ideological issues surrounding colonial cooperation with Imperial Japan. Focusing on the works of Lee Moo-young and Chae Man-sik, with reference to Kim Dong-ni, Kim Dong-in, Yi Kwang-su, and others, the analysis identifies three narrative types: (1) satirical portrayals of “power-profit-seeking collaborators,” (2) stories of repentance and suicide, and (3) narratives that attempt to understand or reconcile with collaborators. By tracing their transformations through liberation, division, and war, the study reveals a shift from satire to hostility and detachment, the replacement of suicide with motifs of metamorphosis and betrayal, and the emergence of Cold War spatial divisions from genealogies that sought to include collaborators. In doing so, the paper also revisits contemporary debates on the redress of colonial past, the tension between individual and collective responsibility, and the continuity of collaboration across the colonial and post-liberation divide. While limited to novels of the immediate post-liberation period, this study hopes to contribute to a more integrated understanding of literary representations of collaboration in modern Korean literature.
