Abstract
This paper compares and analyzes the novels of the same name, Choi In-hoon’s Typhoon and Joseph Conrad’s “Typhoon”. In addition to the same title, the two novels structurally adopt similar subjects and events. This study does not consider this similarity between the two novels to be coincidental. The similarity comes from Choi In-hoon’s subjective and third-world perspective in reading Conrad’s novel, a Western canon, and refuting Conrad’s authorial consciousness through his own novel. This paper argues that Choi In-hoon actively criticized the Western supremacy and racism inherent in Conrad’s novel and implemented post-colonial resistance writing through the creation of Typhoon. This study ultimately shows that Choi In-hoon actively conveys his post-colonial perspective and will through ‘writing back’. If the existing studies of Choi In-hoon’s novels based on a post-colonial perspective explored how the theme of post-coloniality is revealed through the characters in the novels, this study develops a full-fledged post-colonial writer theory and argues that Choi In-hoon conveys post-coloniality through the overall structure of the novel. Choi In-hoon takes Conrad’s novel, one of the authors who created the great tradition of English novels, as his subject and writes back it into his own novel, while aiming for a novelistic perfection that is not inferior to the literary quality of the target novel, and at the same time conveys post-coloniality in a precise manner through it. If putting Westerners and Asians in the subject and object structure of the voyage was a hierarchical order of Conrad’s “Typhoon”, Choi In-hoon is believed to have performed a writing back that reveals this hierarchy while simultaneously overturning the hierarchical order in Typhoon and subverting the subject and object. Writing back is a writing of a third world writer that overturns the imperialistic gaze inherent in the Western canon and a creative act that reveals dynamic intertextuality. If the existing comparative studies of Typhoon were conducted on the premise of Shakespeare’s influence, the act of writing back that this study focuses on is a project that secures specific grounds for confirming the post-coloniality and dynamic intertextuality of Choi In-hoon’s novels while also discovering the subjectivity of Korean literature. This study goes beyond the theory of influence of comparative studies and argues that Choi In-hoon’s post-colonial perspective is also revealed through post-colonial writing back as a methodology of creation, and positions this practical act as an achievement of post-colonial literature.
