Abstract

This study explores and introduces Lee Sang-hwa’s prose “生苦 and 信條” and analyzes the position this text occupies within Lee Sang-hwa’s literature. In addition, it examines the aspects of the social movements he carried out in Gyeongseong or Daegu, where he returned to after 1926, through various materials. Does Spring Come to the Stolen Fields” was completely deleted, and he returned to his hometown of Daegu, where he engaged in social activities such as working for the Daegu branch of the Singanhoe, and worked as an assistant in various anarchist-related organizational incidents. This shows that he was a passionate subject who never gave up on his dream of revolution and did his best in the work given to him. Lee Sang-hwa deeply contemplated whether to turn from anarchism to proletarian literature in the midst of the growing social movement in 1925, when he published this prose. As a result, he participated as a founding member of the KAPF, but after returning to Daegu in 1927, he no longer worked in the central and proletarian literary circles, and instead remained in the anarchist ideology and the theory of people’s art. The prose “生苦 and 信條” that clearly reveals this tendency clearly shows why he did not turn to socialism. In this prose, he calls out Koreans as ‘life’, which inherently contains anarchic revolutionary nature, and he puts forward the idea that their recovery of the instinct they lost under the colonial system is the revolution. In this prose and several poems, including “Does Spring Come to the Stolen Fields”, he predicts a revolution of the post-heavenly world (‘reverse heaven’) that could occur when they recover their vitality with an anarchic idea that views humans as absolutely equal and revolutionary beings.
