Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the poet's literary journey leading up to the creation of Lee Sang-hwa's poem “Does Spring Come to the Stolen Fields?”, which was completely deleted by censorship at the time of publication, and to discuss the process of forming a model of modern Korean resistance poetry in the context of censorship and translation. During the colonial period, poets who had resistance pathos embedded in them had difficulty publishing their works in their entirety. In such a situation, writers had no choice but to devote themselves to rhetoric that could circumvent censorship, and they gained nutrients through translations of avant-garde literary trends. Through translation, Lee Sang-hwa gained insight into avant-garde styles of literature, along with criticism of capitalism's materialism and its vulgarity, and an awareness of the masses and classes. In addition, the translated text served as a proxy for Lee Sang-hwa to express what he wanted to say while avoiding censorship. During Lee Sang-hwa's time studying abroad in Tokyo, which had been a subversive and suspicious person since the March 1st Movement, provided an opportunity for a major cognitive change in him. One is the encounter with the anarchist movement, and the other is the experience of the massacre of Koreans during the Tokyo Earthquake. Through these two incidents, Lee Sang-hwa came closer to the vitalism of the anarchism, and this thinking naturally integrated with the symbolism and traditional thinking that he had already acquired. Thus, in 1926, he wrote the poem “Does Spring Come to the Fields That Have Been Taken Away?” and confronted the censorship system head-on, which had enacted the Public Security Preservation Act and was increasing the level of oppression.
