Abstract

In the study of the British diplomacy to East Asia of the late nineteenth century, Parkes’ diplomatic activities often mentioned and reviewed. However, his diplomatic position in East Asia has not any standards; as it was, how to influence his position to East Asia and Britain, and when its being settled down etc. This also means that the diplomatic position of Britain in East Asia is ambiguous to say. Therefore, I emphasized the study of Parkes’ diplomatic activities which help for understanding to the substantial British diplomacy in East Asian area (China, Japan, and Korea) of the latter half of 19th century. In my study, I examined Parkes’ diplomatic activities in Japan from 1869 to 1874. During the period, I specially focused that his diplomatic position has some weight in being affiliated with Iwakura Mission. I analyzed and got some results from Parkes’ activities of the period: first, Parkes helped for Japanese modernization with consistency of his advice. second, he fully escorted and supported for Japanese officers’ observance to commercial affairs in Britain. third, he deeply concerned with Japanese modernization by the arbitration of Ryukyu Islands crisis. Consequently, his supports became a cornerstone of Japan’s modernization on and after. In conclusion, by above mentioned results of Parkes’ activities, I confirmed which the British government’s diplomacy also did very important roles in Japan (even China, and Korea) of the latter half of nineteenth century.
