존 번연의 산문에 나타난 국가 이미지 연구

본고는 17세기 프로테스탄티즘과 영국의 근대적 국가 정체성 형성관계를 존 번연이라는 개인의 경우를 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다. 번연은 유명한 작가이자 목사였지만 그는 빈농 가문 출신의 땜장이였다. 그러므로 그의 작품들 중에 국가관련 내용을 담고 있는 작품은 한 프로테스탄트 민중의 시각에서 보는 잉글랜드의 근대적 국가형성 모습이 담겨있다. 한스콘은 프로테스탄티즘이 잉글랜드 민족주의, 서유럽 최초의 민족주의를 발생시키는데 기여했다고 한다. 즉 청교도주의는 잉글랜드의 민주주의적 발전에 기여했다는 것이다. 물론 그의 견해에는 논쟁의 여지가 있다. 이에 필자는 먼저 잉글랜드 민족주의 등장 시기에 관한 논쟁을 검토한 후, 존번연의 위상과 배경 설명을 통해 그의 민중적 배경을 설명하였다. 이어서 필자는 국가와 관련된 그의 주요 작품인 『거룩한 성』(Holy City)과 『성전』(Holy War)에 나타난 국가 이미지를 살펴보았다. 존 번연이 생각하는국가는 ‘수평파’나 ‘디거파’처럼 획기적인 성격의 것이 아니라 단지 종교의 자유 즉 양심의 자유가 보장된 약간의 변화가 필요한 국가였다. 그는그런 것 때문에 국가적 문제에 관심을 가졌다. 그런데 필자는 이 과정에서 번연이란 인물에게 국가는 더 이상 그들의 국가가 아니라 나 또는 우리의 국가가 되는 것을 발견하였다. 그러므로 필자는 존 번연의 국가 의식을 근대적 국가의식이라고 생각할 수 있다고 생각한다. 즉 번연에게서는 민족주의적, 민주의적인 요소가 나타나며 이런 점이 잉글랜드가 17세기에 근대적 국가정체성의 형성 계기를 가졌다고 볼 수 있게 만드는 요소라고 생각된다.
Abstract
This paper considers the relationship between 17th Century Protestantism and the impact of John Bunyan’s views on the shaping of England’s national identity. Even though he was a famous writer and pastor, he was also a tinker from a poor farming family. His two writings of all are full of things related to a nation which allows us to see how people were able to shape the progress of modern English nationalism. The writer seeks to identify the kind of spirit of nationalism John Bunyan had by exploring the images of the nations in his works. Chapter 1 examines the discussions on both the shaping of English nationalism and the role of Protestantism by considering both Nationalism(1955) written by Hans Kohn and The Making of English National Identity(2003) by Krishan Kumar. Chapter 2 dwells on the background and social position of John Bunyan. Chapter 3 analyses images of ‘nation’ revealed in Bunyan’s Holy City(1665), while Chapter 4 looks at the national images in another of his works, Holy War(1682). The nation John Bunyan described was not an epoch-making such as the Levellers’ or the Diggers’. but a nation needed to guarantee freedom of religion. Towards seeing desirable changes, he began to take an interest in the matters of the nation. And then, while pursuing his ideal identity of the nation, he began to use ‘my’ or ‘our’ nation. Therefore, Bunyan’s consciousness of ‘nation’ can be thought of as that of the modern nation.
