Abstract
Gnaeus Iulius Agricola assumed governorship in the province of Britannia for the duration of 77 to 84. The military accomplishments of Agricola were meticulously documented in De Vita Iulii Agricolae, written by his son-in-law Tacitus. The literature culminates with a detailed account of Agricola's military campaign in Caledonia, which includes the significant battle at Mons Graupius. This article utilizes both literary and archaeological sources to elucidate the strategic purpose of Agricola’s military expedition and the contribution of his victory in the battle to that objective. Strategically, Agricola's primary aim was to attain complete control over Britannia by means of his expedition and subsequent occupation of Caledonia. He believed that this would ultimately facilitate future expedition into Hibernia. In his geographical perception, Agricola saw Hibernia as possessing strategic importance due to its location between Hispania, Gaul, and Britannia. Subduing Hibernia would effectively pacify the northwestern frontiers of the Roman Empire. Operationally, Agricola's expedition to Caledonia was conducted as an amphibious operation, driving as many Caledonii as possible in the pursuit of a decisive battle. In that context, the battle of Mons Graupius proved decisive and ended with a complete tactical victory for the Roman army. Furthermore, Agricola demonstrated a clear awareness of the concepts of exploitation and propaganda. Immediately after his triumph, Agricola conducted a circumnavigation of the adjacent coasts to consolidate Roman control over the occupied territories of Caledonia. Moreover, the presence of Roman garrisons and forts found along the border between the Highlands and the Lowlands in Scotland serve as corroborative evidence supporting the argument that he sought to establish a division the those two regions, with the aim of maintaining control and safeguarding the relatively habitable Lowlands.
