Abstract
Ultrasound is sound haning a frequency greater than 20,000 cycles per second. Actually, ferquencies in the rang of millions of cycles per second are used for echocardiographic examination. Echocardiography is a noninvasive technique that utilizes high frequency ultrasound tp evaluate strucural, finctional, and hemodynamic status of the cardiovascular system. With 2-D, M-mode, Doppler, and color-flow imaging as the basic cardiovascular examination. The typical patient examination begins with transthoracic 2-D echocardiography utilizing four standard transfer positions: the parastrenal, apical, subcostal, and suprastenal windows. Doppler and M-mode examinations are obtained after forst having a reference from to the two-dimensional examination. The usual echocardiographic examination in the adult begins with a 2.0 to 5.0 MHz transducer. In a thin individual or a pediatric, a 5.0 to 7.0 MHz transducer should provide adequate penetration and improves the image resolution. Echocardiography increasingly has become a key component in the routine evaluation of patients with suspected or known cardiovascular disease. The ability to obtain a high-quality echocardiographic recording is probably the most important factor in determining how useful an echocardiographic examination will be. Thus, the echocardiographic examination has become a highly sophisiticated technique that requires experience, skill, and an understanding of the requirements for an adequate echocardiogram.
