Abstract
Primary aim of this study is to determine the application potential of Vitek system in the identification and testing antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial isolates from clinical specimens. Antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and P. cepacia was also presented to give a basal database for the practical therapy. Microorganisms(5753 strains) were isolated from the specimens of in - and out - patients of Chonju Presbyterian Hospital from July 1, 1994 to June 30, 1995. Antimicrobial susceptibility of the Pseudomonas strains was tested for 682 P. aeruginosa and, 573 P. cepacia strains against 10 antibiotics such as Amikacin , Aztreonam , Cefoperazone, Ceftazidime, Ciprofloxacin, Gentamicin, Imipenem, Piperacillin, Tobramycin, and Trimethoprim / sulfamethoxazole. Occurring frquency of P. aeruginosa was high in July and August, but that of P. cepacia was in March and April. Thirty - one percent of P. aeruginosa strains were orginated from the neurological surgery, and 23 % of P. cepacia strains were from the orthopedy surgery. Antimicrobial susceptibility pattern between the two species was somewhat different. Ninty percent of the P. aeruginosa strains were suceptible to Ceftazidime, but 60 % of them were to rests. While , more than 80 % of P. cepacia was susceptible to all of the antibiotics except aminoglycosides. Most of the P. cepacia strains(98 %) were susceptible to Trimethoprim / sulfamethoxazole, while 3 % of P. aeruginosa was. This chemical was useful to inthibit the P. cepacia . P. aeruginosa f rom urine showed lower susceptibility to all of antibiotics than those from other specimens. This phenomenon was not found in P. cepacia. Range of Minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) of the Amikacin, Tobramycin and Ceftazidime was relatively narrow as 2~64, 0.5~16, and 8~32㎍/ml, respectively. That of other antibiotics ranged from 0.5 to 64 ㎍/ml.
