Abstract

This study compares the short and long-term IPO performance of institutional investors with individual investors during the period from July 2007 to the end of 2015. When evaluating the IPO return by value weighted average buy and hold return (VWBHR) calculated based on the IPO allocation ratio, institutional investors tend to underperform individual investors in both short and long-term. In addition, IPO stocks with high institutional allocations show relatively poorer return performance as well as operating performance after IPO compared to those with low institutional allocations. Therefore, this study can not find any evidence that the lead underwriter preferentially assigns undervalued IPOs to institutional investors as their main customers. Institutional investors do not increase short-term selling in overheated IPOs, and the flipping of institutional investors does not seem to have any effect on both sort and long-term returns. The higher the demand of institutional and individuals for IPO stocks, the higher the post-IPO return but the institutional demand only affects the return on the IPO date and is not related to the long-term return. On the other hand, the larger the demand of individual investors, the higher the return on the listing day, but the lower the long-term return. This suggests that over-optimism of individual investors leads to the stock price bubble, which in turn leads to a reversal of long-term return.
