Abstract
The clinical values of a manual band counts were investigated for the diagnosis of infection in 117 subjects. Seventy eight subjects of the population admitted to a hospital with the possibility of bacterial infection, but thirty nine subjects were proven to be patient in a baterial culture and thirty nine subjects didn’t show no infection in the culture. The other subjects visited a hospital for physical examination were selected as the control group. One investigator performed all procedures of manual 500 cell differentials in three groups. The absolute and percent band count, the absolute and percent total neutrophil count, total white cell count, the presence of neutrophils more immature than bands, and ESR were analyzed for their ability to identify the patients with an infection. A band count of greater than 15% had a sensitivity of 71% , a specificity of 90% , and an efficiency of 81 % between infected patients and control subjects. Each efficiency value between infected patients and non-infected patients, non-infected patient and controI was 57% and 76% , respectively. This results suggests the manual band count is meaningful for the diagnosis of infective diseases and it seem to be increased in non-infected patients with fever and inflamation.
