Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of mortality salience on an anthropomorphized brand. Based on the former studies of mortality and brand anthropomorphism, the study speculated that mortality salience has an influence on the evaluation of personified brands with the moderation of sociality motivation. The concept of sociality motivation is a kind of desire for social connectedness. At the same time, the sociality motivation has considered as a significant psychological factor of anthropomorphism of inhuman objects in the area of psychology. By conducting the survey experiment, the study found that neither of mortality salience and sociality motivation has a main effect on the humanized brand. However, it was proven that the interaction effect of mortality salience and sociality motivation has a significant effect on the anthropomorphized brand. Specifically, in the case of sociality motivation is high, an idea of death has a positive influence on the personified brand. However, the effect was reversed in the case of sociality motivation is low. Based on the result above, this research is expected to contribute to expansion of the research in the area of mortality salience and brand anthropomorphism.
