Abstract

This study analyzed what items domestic listed companies use for earnings management. Discretionary specific accruals were classified into trade receivables, inventories, trade payables, accrued liabilities, depreciation expenses, and special items. As such, for each variable, the measurement method of Carol and Christine (2004) was used. According to the results of the analysis, First, for all samples, domestic listed companies are using specific accruals evenly as a means of earnings management. Second, as a result of classifying groups based on discretionary accruals, discretionary trade receivables, discretionary inventories, and discretionary trade payables are used discretionarily in both groups (increase/decrease in earnings). In addition, an item showing the difference between the both groups, in the case of the earnings increasing group, special items are used for earnings management to increase earnings. On the other hand, in the case of the earnings decreasing group, the earnings is reduced by using sales administrative expenses, which is a discretionary expenditure item. According to the results by type of business, the types of businesses with weak earnings management using discretionary specific accruals are transportation equipment and medical precision equipment companies, general construction businesses, and professional service businesses. The types of businesses that use all of the specific accruals are the chemical industry, and in particular, discretionary special items show the most significant value.
