오늘날 산업사회에서 벗어나 새로운 사회에 대한 규명작업이 활발해지고 있는 가운데 이들 사회를 탈산업사회, 탈근대사회, 혹은 정보사회 등 여러 가지로 기술되면서 논의되고 있지만, 글로벌 사회로서의 총체적 맥락에서 접근하는 것은 이제 그리 이상한 일이 아니다. 글로벌 사회에 대한 분석에서 문화는 보편적인 하나의 영역으로서 중요한 관심영역이 되었다. 이러한 문화의 축을 이루는 중심문화는 늘 서구의 문화였고, 이에 대한 해명을 우리는 하나의 과제로 삼고 계속 주목하고 있다. 이글은 동양의 문화가 사실 왜곡되면서 위축되는 그 근저에는 서구중심의 서구문화의 우월감이 깊이 뿌리박혀 있다는 문제의식에서 출발하고 있다. 이를 위해 영국의 제국주의의 사상은 동양을 타자화하는 중요한 이데올로기였다고 보고, 19세기 이러한 영국의 지배적인 사상을 이루는데 스펜서의 진화론이 상당한 기여를 한 것으로 보인다. 실제로 스펜서의 사회진화론이 제국주의 사상에 영향을 주었는지에 대한 직접적인 인과관계는 알 수 없으나, 그의 사상은 당시의 시대적 흐름과 영국의 정책에 상당한 영향력을 주었다는 것은 틀림이 없다. 벤담이나 고드윈 같은 공리주의자들의 급진주의 사상이 결국 꽃을 피우지 못한 것은 스펜서와 같은 사상가들이 편 보수적인 사회진화론에서 나올 수 있고, 이러한 것은 대외적으로 제국주의를 강화하는 이데올로기가 되었던 것이다. 제국주의적 요소는 동양사회를 타자화하면서 개발 혹은 도태의 대상으로 여기게 되었고 오늘날 오리엔탈리즘의 기원으로 작용하는 것이 아닌지 보아야 한다. 따라서 스펜서의 사회진화론이야 말고 오리엔탈리즘이라는 담론의 실질적인 출발점으로 보아야 하는 것이 아닌지 적극적으로 검토해야 한다.
Abstract
This paper is to explore the relation betwen Herbert Spencer's social evolution and orientalism. It is important to apreciate Spencer's enormous sway over the English society during the nineteenth century. At that time, Darwin's empirical verification of evolution placed the idea on an unshakable scientific basis. Sp encer's social evolution was also conected with Darwin's theory. First of all, Spencer saw society as a organic system. For Spencer, society is fundamentally a division of labour and is conceptualised in terms of the function of an grganism. Spencer's organic theory was novel enough to be an innovation in social thought. Society is a structure evolving toward individualism and equality. Whether or not Spen cer successfuly reconciled individualism with the organic view in a separate mater, but there can be no doubt that individualism w as a novel feature in his organic aproach. It can be said that individualism is related to liberalism. Here Spencer's theory of evolution is a deply sophisticated solution to the liberal dil emma. However, his theory of evolution includes the liberal role of the individual in the process of evolution, the individual is controlled by society and government for purposes of war, or imperial policy. So, it happened that his theory of evolution justified the imperialism of the England. The imperialism is related with orientalism, because of the fact that both of them showed up for the exploitation of the Orient society. In a word, orientalism is concerned with colonial discourse. Therefore, Spencer's social evolution including the logic of imperialism is the basis of orientalism.
