비판적 실재론이 상기시키는 사회과학의 가능성

비판적 실재론은 사회과학은 물론 과학의 특성과 방법을 해명하는중요한 견해로 자리잡았다. 비판적 실재론의 주요 주장들은 과학 및사회과학에 대한 이해뿐 아니라 더 적절한 사회과학 연구의 수행에중요하게 기여할 수 있다. 이 글은 전통적인 경험주의 및 실증주의과학철학의 암묵적 존재론, 과학적 연구의 사회적 활동으로서의 특성, 과학적 연구의 존재론적 및 인식론적 전제가정들, 과학적 연구에서 사용하는 추론양식들과 설명구조, 사회과학의 연구주제인 ‘사회적인 것’의 성질 등에 관한 비판적 실재론의 견해를 정리한다. 이런 인식을 기초로 자연과학과 사회과학의 이분법에 반대하면서 발현적 실체로서 사회구조들을 연구하는, 원리와 본질에서는 자연과학과 동일하지만 형태에서는 상이한 사회과학들이 가능하고 필요함을 논증한다. 아울러 각각의 과학은 연구 주제의 특성과 관련 지식발전 정도에 따라 다양하고 특수한 방법들을 개발하고 사용하고 있음을 강조한다.
Abstract
Critical realism philosophy of science, advocated by Roy Bhaskar, offers valuable knowledge clarifying the characteristics and methods of sciences as well as social sciences. The main arguments of critical realism can contribute significantly not only to the understanding the nature of sciences and social sciences but conducting more fruitful social scientific inquiry. This paper summarizes the views of critical realism on the traditional empiricist and positivist philosophy of science and its tacit empirical realist ontology, the characteristics of scientific inquiries as social activities, the ontological and epistemological premises of scientific inquiries, reasoning styles and explanatory structures used in sciences, the subjects of social sciences and the attributes and power of ‘the social’. On the basis of that, it argues against the dichotomy of natural science and social science, and argues for the possibility and necessity of social sciences that study the social structures as emergent entities and are a paramorpbic relationship with natural sciences. Also ion, it emphasizes that each science develops and uses various and special methods according to the characteristics of the subjects and the degree of development of related knowledge.
