Abstract
In an effort to help fill the gap in our knowledge regarding the role of the laity movement in educational history, this article focuses on beguines within the context of women's educational ministry in the Late Middle Ages. Beguines provided spiritual leadership and teaching ministry through educational models such as mentoring, instruction, charity, helping the sick, preaching, and translation of the Bible. Because the beguines were not hidden behind convent walls but were instead a visible presence in the city, they were often the focus of theologians' ideas about religious women in general. The article implicitly addresses the implication of the beguines' teaching ministry and raise further question for us today.
