Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of collectivism vs individualism and perceived similarity on the evaluation of the brand extension. Studies on brand extension, as one of the main research areas in marketing, have been actively carried out for the past twenty years. It is a research field closely related to consumers’ stereotypical belief systems and thus is clearly under specific cultural influences. Nevertheless, there have been only a few research cases relevant to this cultural aspect. The aim of the our research is, through cross-cultural comparison, to examine the influence of the similarities between parent brand and extended product about evaluation of parent brand caused by brand extension. To this end, this paper deals with the issue by categorizing cultures into collectivism (Korea) and individualism(Germany) and the aforementioned similarities into similarity level. As a results, there is no cultural difference about evaluation of parent brand in case of similar brand extension. For dissimilar brand extension, however, the results obtained are such that the individualistic culture shows more negative about evaluation of parent brand than the collectivistic
