초록
This paper presents an analysis of consumer’s determinants of illegal file-sharing of motion pictures. As academic studies on illegal file-sharing are not sufficient, we hope the current research would contribute to anti-piracy activities. Based on cost-benefit analysis, presents study investigates the effects of the degree to which a consumer perceives illegal movie copies as providing the same utility as watching the original movie in a theater or on DVD, utility or costs of legal watching, specific utilities of illegal filesharing, costs of illegal file-sharing of motion pictures, and consumer’s knowledge of file-sharing. The specific utilities of illegal file-sharing is composed of transaction utility, collection utility, mobility utility, storage utility, anti-industry utility and social utility. The non-financial costs of illegal file-sharing is consists of search costs, moral costs, legal costs and technical costs. Utilizing a research method called Bayesian network, this paper models and tests probable interrelationship among variables which influence consumers' illegal downloading behavior as well as movie-going or DVD borrowing. While costs related to legal watching directly decrease consumers'number of legal watching, collection utility increases the number of downloading. Illegal file-sharing is a very easy way for consumers to collect and store movies, which is one of the main reason why many consumers go for illegal file-sharing of motion pictures. Other variables such as transaction utility, storage utility, social utility and knowledge of file-sharing are indirect influencers which is positively related to collection utility. Key
