Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the motivation for senior customers to use a welfare center and paid lecture program service in a qualitative way. The study set out to identify the ultimate behavioral factors of their use of a social welfare service institution. For those purposes, the investigator employed the laddering technique based on the means-end chain theory to figure out a value system formed when senior customers choose a welfare center and program service. Beyond the level of simply identifying the behavioral factors, the study examined in depth the major attributes that senior customers considered when making a choice, the results they expected through the attributes, and the ultimate expected value achievable through the results. In an effort to gather research data, the investigator conducted an in-depth interview with 40 senior citizens using a welfare center for the elderly. They were specifically senior customers who had much experience and interest in the use of a welfare center and had used a welfare center for a year. The findings were as follows: first, the users of a welfare center considered ten attributes: knowledge acquirement, accessibility, programs, friendly relationships, time efficiency, comfortable atmosphere, hobby life, convenience of service, utilization of leisure, time planning, healthy life, and self-development. Second, They identified total 20 major benefits. The functional benefits include the quality enhancement of various programs, good environment, professionalism, professional instructors. In addition, social and psychological benefits include health management, stress relief, vitality of life, participating in activity, improvement of ability, rich conversation, low cost, fulfillment of desire, development of aptitude, sense of community, rich interpersonalrelationships, differentiation, prevention of dementia, planned life, diversion, and rational consumption. Third, the respondents sought to ten values by using a welfare center and program. Specifically, they were a sense of achievement related to current life, cultivation of mentality, self-realization, self-satisfaction, comfort, quality life, values of life, self-confidence, happiness, and convenience according to the analysis results. Finally, a hierarchical value map produced using a classification list indicated that the elderly pursued delightfulness, self-satisfaction and restfulness in using a welfare center, and a sense of accomplishment, delightfulness and self-satisfaction in participating in a paid program.
