Abstract
Yom, Gyu-Eul. 2006. Korean high school students' and teachers' views on grammar instruction and their comparison. The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 14(4), 57-81. This paper reports the results of an exploratory study which examines and compares high school students' views on grammar instruction with those of their peers in different levels of proficiency and with those of their teachers. A total of 198 high school students and 114 English teachers were included in the study. They were given a questionnaire containing 7 items about grammar instruction and were asked to respond using a five-point scale. The results reveal that the majority of students agree that grammar is essential and useful in English learning, but they don't like the study of grammar and don't want more of it. With a few exceptions, teachers hold more favorable attitudes toward grammar instruction than do the students. There are no significant differences in views on grammar instruction between middle school and high school teachers.
