Abstract

This article investigates the relationship between newspaper publications’ political leanings and the news attitudes toward and news frames on the 2019 boycott of Japanese goods in South Korea, namely No Japan campaign. It performs a content analysis of 544 newspaper articles published in four major left-right political spectrum print media during July and August in 2019. We find that the progressive newspapers favorably view the anti-Japanese boycott while the conservative newspapers develop critical attitudes toward the boycott. No significant difference in the political leanings is found in the news articles with neutral attitude to the boycott. For the news frames, the progressive newspapers use more of such frames that Japanese government should be blamed for its preemptive economic ban against South Korea, the civic and public organizations should lead the boycott respectively, and the boycott should be carried out based upon a cosmopolitan solidarity regardless of one’s nationality. The conservative newspapers cover the boycott news stories in such frames as the boycott being ineffective in promoting national interests and security by showing that there are some companies belittling the boycott movement. While generally being in line with the psychological traits of the political ideologies, these results reveal some unique characteristics of Koreans’ progressive and conservative nationalism. Some contributions and limitations to the nationalistic consumer boycott are discussed.
