Abstract
This study examined the effects of self-deprivation, implicit self-theory, and interaction on product evaluation. Study 1 tested the hypothesis that enhancement theorists (vs. invariant theorists) can give favorable evaluations of adaptive products that can further develop their abilities when they experience intellectual deficits among self-deficient. The analysis result indicated that when the product type is an adaptive product, the incremental theorist’ product evaluation is higher than the entity theorists. However, when the product type is the compensatory product, there is no difference in product evaluation between incremental theorists and entity theorists. In Study 2, the empirical results found no difference in the preference for product type for the invariant theorists, whereas the preference for the adaptive product could increase for the enhancement theorists who experienced the deficiency. This study not only enriched the implicit self-theory literature but also introduced and classified product types as compensatory and adaptive products expanding consumer choice of product research. This study provided the general discussion, implications, and further research in the final section.
