Abstract
Compensatory consumption plays a vital role in an individual's spending behavior and constitutes a significant part of their overall consumption activities. Research has demonstrated that compensatory consumption can bolster positive emotions and mitigate negative ones. To the author’s knowledge, no study has explored its impact on consumer happiness, the ultimate goal of consumption. To address this gap, the present study investigated the influence of compensatory consumption on emotional responses related to consumption and, more notably, on consumer happiness. An online survey was conducted and 428 responses were used in the analysis. The key findings are as follows: Compensatory consumption in both positive and negative situation, consumers did not experience negative emotions as strongly as positive emotions. They spent more often and spent less money on average on compensatory consumption in negative situations than in positive situations. In the structural analysis, compensatory consumption in the negative situation enhanced negative emotions, however the magnitude was smaller than the increased positive emotions at the same time. And in the positive situation, the compensatory consumption migrated negative emotions and elevated positive emotions. And in both negative and positive situations, compensatory consumption indirectly increased consumer happiness through elevated positive emotions. Therefore, it is noteworthy that while compensatory consumption may occasionally lead to negative emotions, its overall effect on consumer happiness is not significantly detrimental. Therefore, it is important to avoid focusing on the only the adverse consequences of compensatory consumption. Instead, the behavior should be reevaluated from a neutral perspective, and its potential positive functions are worth to explore in enhancing overall well-being of the consumers.
