The purpose of this study is to probe for the spiritual characteristic of Matthean community and the social situations of the Matthean community as its background. The New Testament shows us the faith unity in Jesus Christ and the various spiritual features. The Gospel of Mark is the basic source of the Gospel of Matthew, which has the different spiritual characteristic from the Mark because there are their own communities as a kind of backgrounds. Firstly the characteristic of spirituality of Matthean community is that it is Jesus-centered. It is also the common feature of the New Testament community. The Gospel of Matthew shows the Jesus-centric spirituality by presenting that Jesus is the way to God, the real revealer of God's will, and the interpreter of the Bible. Secondly the Matthean community shows us the spirituality of education. In the Matthew the most important ministry of Jesus is the education(4:23; 9:35; 11:1). Therefore in the Gospel of Matthew Jesus is teaching Christ and an only teacher, and a leader(23:8, 10). In the last scene after resurrection, Jesus in the Matthew has ordered His disciples to make all nations His disciple and teach them to obey everything He has commanded them (28:16-20). Lastly the important characteristic of Matthean spirituality is the understanding. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus had been heartbreaking for the asinine disciples(15:15-16; 16:5-12) and kept trying to have them understand (especially 13:51-52).And he professed that the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees is the harmful yeast(16:6-12) and they are the blind leaders (15:14; 23:13-36) because they teach and lead people with misunderstanding on God's Will. Therefore Matthean community had to have the right understanding following disciples who had been educated and understood by Jesus, that is, a perfect revealer and final interpreter for God's Will. This characteristic of spirituality shows us the spirituality of Matthean community as a kind of scholar community which dwells in an urban, economically rich, and had been institutionalizing.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to probe for the spiritual characteristic of Matthean community and the social situations of the Matthean community as its background.
