Abstract
In the Korean society, particularly colleges, collectivism has almost disappeared while the need for individualism has increased rapidly. However, any dialogue to facilitate change has not yet transcended the limit of the traditional collectivistic way of communication. The present cultural syndrome in the Korean students was analyzed to verify their cultural dilemma. It is constructed how to engage in a change conversation on the basis of Miller’s Motivational Interviewing. Its main structure is composed of its spirit, 5 core skills, and 4 processes. Its spirit includes partnership, acceptance, compassion, and evocation. Its core skills include reflective listening, asking open questions, affirming, summarizing, and informing. Its processes are consisted of engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning. In Motivational Interviewing, the primary principle lies in evocation. It excludes a deficit model but incorporates a strength model. A person is not lacking what is needed but almost filled with what is needed. That is eliciting the partner’s own motivations for change. Evocation enables each other to normalize indifference, ambivalence, or resistance toward change. They are not considered as obstacle but stages in development. Evocation is the principle by which individualistic change conversation may be built. Among those indifferent to change it is possible to explore their desire, ability, reason, and need for change. Among those ambivalent to change it is possible to pay attention to their positive elements and ignore both their negative and neutral elements. Among those resistant to change it is possible to reframe their resistance and move into their flexible and productive areas.
